The Cabinet

The National Security Council (NSC) is the President's principle forum for consideringnational security and foreign policy matters with his senior national security advisers andcabinet officials. The Council also serves as the President's principle arm for coordinatingthese policies and their execution among various government agencies. The Council hascounterparts in the national security councils of many other nations.

The National Security Council was established by the National Security Act of 1947 (PL 235- 61 Stat. 496; U.S.C. 402), amended by the National Security Act Amendments of 1949 (63Stat. 579; 50 U.S.C. 401 et seq.). Later in 1949, as part of the Reorganization Plan, the Councilwas placed under the jurisdiction of the Executive Office of the President.

With this authority the council has undertaken many audacious and sometimes questionableefforts including the ‘High Value Detainee Interrogation Group’ and the ‘Disposition Matrix’.

The Cabinet is chaired by the President and its membership is comprised of both statutoryand non-statutory members depending on the matter at hand. See the ‘Cabinet Positions’section for a list of the positions that will be present at the BGUMUN Cabinet Crisis.
