Crisis Overview

Turkey: As a country which shares a border with Syria and Iraq and is tense regardingthe fighting between ISIS and other militant groups in Koubani and other border towns,Turkey is an actor with obvious anti-ISIS ambitions. This country holds the secondlargest army in NATO and one of the strongest economies in the world. However it facesa problem from within the Kurdish minority, which riots as protest to the apathyErdogan shows in face of the continued slaughtering of the Kurds in Iraq. This can havea strong effect once specific interests are in Jeopardy.

 

Israel: The United States' closest ally in the Middle East. Considered the most advancedarmy in the region in terms of technology and air force, [R3] however reluctant to openlyjoin the fight against ISIS. Helps injured Syrian rebels crossing the border in order toreceive medical aid. Israel’s intelligence community has a strong relationship with itsAmerican counterpart; however recent diplomatic relations have been rocky.

 

Jordan: The Hashemite Kingdom has recently felt the cruelty of ISIS and has openlyshown off its retaliatory capabilities. Jordan is a close US ally in the Middle East and hasbeen receiving aid from the US since the crisis in Syria began.Jordan shares a long border with Syria and a shorter one with Iraq. It has clear interestin defeating the Islamic State.

 

Iraq: Iraq is a Shiite led state. Since the American withdrawal following the longoperation to capture Saddam Hussein and fighting Iraqi rebels, Iraq went into adangerous time of insurgency and terrorism. The extreme Sunni organization TheIslamic State is threatening to divide the country, aiming at establishing a caliphate inthe region. The government is mostly cooperative with the US and hopes for as muchhelp as possible. One of the foremost issues of Iraq is the Kurdish minority, holdingautonomy in the northern part of the country. Currently the Kurdish minority isfighting ISIS, and so far the interest of the Shiite and Kurdish parties is similar, whatwill happen after ISIS is defeated?
